Il d\u00e9finit les faits sociaux comme des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s ext\u00e9rieures \u00e0 l\u2019individu et exercant sur lui une contrainte, ce qui permet d\u2019\u00e9tudier la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re objective. Dans <em>Les R\u00e8gles de la m\u00e9thode sociologique<\/em>, il \u00e9tablit les principes d\u2019une m\u00e9thode scientifique appliqu\u00e9e aux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes sociaux. Il montre, notamment dans <em>Le Suicide<\/em>, que des comportements individuels peuvent s\u2019expliquer par des causes sociales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il distingue deux formes de solidarit\u00e9 : la solidarit\u00e9 m\u00e9canique, propre aux soci\u00e9t\u00e9s traditionnelles, et la solidarit\u00e9 organique, caract\u00e9ristique des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s modernes fond\u00e9es sur la division du travail. Il introduit aussi le concept d\u2019anomie pour d\u00e9signer une situation de d\u00e9sorganisation des normes sociales, souvent li\u00e9e aux crises ou aux transformations rapides. Dans <em>Les Formes \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires de la vie religieuse<\/em>, il analyse la religion comme un fait social qui renforce la coh\u00e9sion du groupe. Pour lui, la conscience collective regroupe les valeurs et croyances partag\u00e9es par une soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Enfin, il insiste sur le r\u00f4le central de l\u2019\u00e9ducation dans la socialisation des individus et la transmission des normes sociales, et son \u0153uvre reste une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence majeure
