Magistrat puis maire de Bordeaux, il se retire de la vie publique pour se consacrer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture de ses <em>Essais<\/em>, \u0153uvre majeure publi\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de 1580.<br>Dans ce livre, il r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit sur lui-m\u00eame afin de mieux comprendre la condition humaine : \u00ab Je suis moi-m\u00eame la mati\u00e8re de mon livre \u00bb.<br>Montaigne d\u00e9veloppe une pens\u00e9e sceptique inspir\u00e9e des Anciens, notamment de Sextus Empiricus. Sa devise, \u00ab Que sais-je ? \u00bb, exprime le doute face aux certitudes absolues.<br>Il d\u00e9fend la tol\u00e9rance et critique le fanatisme religieux dans le contexte troubl\u00e9 des guerres de Religion.<br>Son amiti\u00e9 avec \u00c9tienne de La Bo\u00e9tie marque profond\u00e9ment sa pens\u00e9e.<br>Montaigne valorise l\u2019exp\u00e9rience personnelle, l\u2019observation et l\u2019\u00e9ducation fond\u00e9e sur le jugement plut\u00f4t que sur la simple m\u00e9morisation.<br>Son style libre, m\u00ealant anecdotes, citations et r\u00e9flexions, inaugure le genre moderne de l\u2019essai.<br>Son influence est consid\u00e9rable sur la philosophie moderne, notamment sur Blaise Pascal, Ren\u00e9 Descartes et Friedrich Nietzsche.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div
