l\u2019homme et du monde : tout ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne, y compris les pens\u00e9es et les passions, rel\u00e8ve du mouvement de la mati\u00e8re.<br>Dans son \u0153uvre principale, Leviathan, il cherche \u00e0 comprendre comment garantir la paix civile.<br>Selon lui, dans l\u2019\u00ab \u00e9tat de nature \u00bb, les hommes sont fondamentalement \u00e9gaux en puissance et mus par le d\u00e9sir, la peur et l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat personnel.<br>Cette \u00e9galit\u00e9 conduit \u00e0 une situation de m\u00e9fiance permanente et \u00e0 la \u00ab guerre de tous contre tous \u00bb.<br>La vie humaine y serait \u00ab solitaire, pauvre, brutale et courte \u00bb.<br>Pour sortir de ce chaos, les individus concluent un contrat social.<br>Ils abandonnent une partie de leurs libert\u00e9s \u00e0 un souverain charg\u00e9 d\u2019assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 collective.<br>Le pouvoir politique doit donc \u00eatre fort et indivisible afin d\u2019\u00e9viter le retour de la guerre civile.<br>Hobbes d\u00e9fend ainsi une conception absolutiste de l\u2019\u00c9tat, mais fond\u00e9e sur un accord rationnel des individus et non sur le droit divin.<br>Sa philosophie marque une rupture importante avec la pens\u00e9e m\u00e9di\u00e9vale et influence durablement la philosophie politique moderne.<br>Ses id\u00e9es inspireront ou provoqueront les r\u00e9actions de penseurs comme John Locke,
