Locke<\/strong> (1632-1704) est l\u2019un des principaux penseurs de l\u2019empirisme et du lib\u00e9ralisme politique.<br>Il soutient que l\u2019esprit humain na\u00eet comme une \u00ab table rase \u00bb (<em>tabula rasa<\/em>) : les connaissances viennent de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience sensible et de la r\u00e9flexion.<br>Dans son ouvrage majeur, <em>Essai sur l\u2019entendement humain<\/em>, il critique l\u2019id\u00e9e de connaissances inn\u00e9es.<br>Pour Locke, les id\u00e9es simples proviennent des sensations, puis l\u2019esprit les combine en id\u00e9es complexes.<br>En politique, il d\u00e9veloppe la th\u00e9orie du contrat social : les individus cr\u00e9ent l\u2019\u00c9tat pour prot\u00e9ger leurs droits naturels.<br>Ces droits fondamentaux sont la vie, la libert\u00e9 et la propri\u00e9t\u00e9.<br>Le pouvoir politique doit donc \u00eatre limit\u00e9 et soumis au consentement des gouvern\u00e9s.<br>Si un gouvernement devient tyrannique, le peuple poss\u00e8de un droit de r\u00e9sistance.<br>Ses id\u00e9es influencent fortement les r\u00e9volutions anglaise, am\u00e9ricaine et fran\u00e7aise.<br>Dans <em>Lettre sur la tol\u00e9rance<\/em>, Locke d\u00e9fend la libert\u00e9 religieuse et condamne les pers\u00e9cutions confessionnelles.<br>Il distingue toutefois le domaine religieux du pouvoir civil.<br>Sa philosophie marque durablement la pens\u00e9e moderne, notamment en politique, en p\u00e9dagogie et en th\u00e9orie de la connaissance.<br>Locke est souvent consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un pr\u00e9curseur des d\u00e9mocraties lib\u00e9rales
