fondateur de la science politique moderne.<br>Fonctionnaire de la R\u00e9publique de Florence, il observe directement les luttes de pouvoir entre \u00c9tats italiens, princes et papaut\u00e9.<br>Son \u0153uvre la plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, Le Prince, analyse les moyens de conqu\u00e9rir et conserver le pouvoir.<br>Il y d\u00e9fend une politique fond\u00e9e sur le r\u00e9alisme plut\u00f4t que sur la morale chr\u00e9tienne traditionnelle.<br>Selon lui, le dirigeant doit avant tout garantir la stabilit\u00e9 et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00c9tat.<br>Il peut donc \u00eatre amen\u00e9 \u00e0 user de ruse, de force ou de violence si les circonstances l\u2019exigent.<br>La c\u00e9l\u00e8bre id\u00e9e \u00ab la fin justifie les moyens \u00bb lui est souvent attribu\u00e9e, m\u00eame s\u2019il ne l\u2019\u00e9crit pas exactement ainsi.<br>Machiavel distingue la morale priv\u00e9e de l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 politique.<br>Il insiste aussi sur la virt\u00f9 : l\u2019\u00e9nergie, l\u2019intelligence et la capacit\u00e9 d\u2019agir face \u00e0 la fortune, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire le hasard des \u00e9v\u00e9nements.<br>Dans Discours sur la premi\u00e8re d\u00e9cade de Tite-Live, il montre toutefois sa pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les r\u00e9gimes r\u00e9publicains et la participation civique.<br>Sa pens\u00e9e rompt avec l\u2019id\u00e9alisme m\u00e9di\u00e9val et inaugure une vision moderne de l\u2019\u00c9tat et du pouvoir.<br>Le terme \u00ab machiav\u00e9lique \u00bb d\u00e9signe aujourd\u2019hui une attitude politique cynique et manipulatrice, souvent associ\u00e9e
