N\u00e9 esclave en Phrygie, il fut affranchi puis enseigna la philosophie \u00e0 Rome avant d\u2019\u00eatre exil\u00e9 \u00e0 Nicopolis par l\u2019empereur Domitien.<br>Son enseignement, transmis par son disciple Arrien dans les <em>Entretiens<\/em> et le <em>Manuel<\/em>, repose sur une distinction fondamentale : certaines choses d\u00e9pendent de nous (jugements, d\u00e9sirs, volont\u00e9) et d\u2019autres non (richesse, sant\u00e9, r\u00e9putation, mort).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour \u00c9pict\u00e8te, la sagesse consiste \u00e0 concentrer son effort sur ce qui d\u00e9pend de soi et \u00e0 accepter le reste avec s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9. La libert\u00e9 v\u00e9ritable n\u2019est pas politique ou mat\u00e9rielle, mais int\u00e9rieure : l\u2019homme libre est celui qui ma\u00eetrise ses repr\u00e9sentations et ses passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il consid\u00e8re que le malheur vient moins des \u00e9v\u00e9nements que du jugement port\u00e9 sur eux.
